Going into its third year, the Chamber’s decade-long
Workforce 2010 initiative has gained momentum and is poised to
make a dramatic impact on business in Southern Nevada. Created
under the direction of the Chamber’s Board of Trustees, the
initiative was launched to address the preparedness of the
community’s workforce.
Tier 1 The first phase of the three-tiered program focuses on K-12 education.
All of the Chamber’s boards and councils have embraced an
active role in carrying out this ambitious program.
Volunteers from the Chamber’s boards and councils are
focusing their efforts on different core aspects of the
program including:
·
educator recruitment
·
educator retention
·
job
shadowing and internship opportunities
·
mentoring
·
educator appreciation and recognition
·
publicity
Board of Advisors
The Board of Advisors is continuing its work on the "WE CARE"
program, designed to attract, welcome and retain educators
from across the country. Volunteers contact teacher applicants
to offer information about Las Vegas and to encourage them to
sign their contracts with the Clark County School District.
The Board is developing a fact sheet containing information
about living in Las Vegas for volunteers to use when making
their calls. Volunteers will also assist with locating housing
for new teachers and helping spouses find employment.

Business Council
The Business Council is focusing on working closely with the
school district through the partnership/mentorships with the
School Board trustees. Three selected Business council
members, one government affairs committee member and one
Chamber Board Trustee will meet and mentor the School Board
trustees. Goals and measurements on this initiative are being
established.
Community Council
As part of the Workforce 2010 project, the Community Council
in conjunction with the Clark County School District will
present Groundhog Job Shadow Day on February 13, 2003. The
Council is currently seeking business representatives from a
variety of professions to allow a high school student, who has
expressed interest in that career, to be a “shadow” for a
day. This experience touches the lives of over 500 students
district wide and assists them in planning their futures.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day Participation Form.
Prospectors
The Chamber’s Prospectors have developed several goals for
educator appreciation including partnership with the Clark
County School District in their "Rave Review" program. This
program offers monthly recognition to educators who have been
selected for recognition of their outstanding efforts. The
Prospectors are exploring ways of enriching this program by
increasing the number of ceremonies held each year from two to
four and holding the ceremonies in alternative locations.
Marketing Committee
A marketing committee liaison has been assigned to each
council to assist with publicity. Marketing Committee
volunteers attend board and council meetings, write articles
for publication and provide marketing and publicity advice.
Tier
2
the second
level is focused on top high school/college seniors investing
their skills and talents in Southern Nevada. This tier is
underway with the meeting of the existing special program
members in the community and bringing them together to
coordinate and help establish goals to improve our retention
of graduates.
Tier
3
the third
level is mentoring to emerging adult talent and adult job
training.
Leadership Council
Workforce 2010 has been incorporated in the Leadership Las
Vegas program this year. In addition, the council is actively
soliciting the involvement of Leadership and Focus graduates
for participation in adult job training.
A
Health Care committee
During this
past year a committee of hospital, Community College of
Southern Nevada and UNLV members have met and established some
criteria to promote increased in house training and school
training programs for Health Care industry personnel. |
